Welcome to Cedar House!

Cedar House is a two-storeyed, Edwardian mansion originally built in 1909 for the prominent Muir family of Gisborne. Her chequered history includes periods of use as a private school for girls "St Winifred's", private hotels, and restaurants, before being transformed into Gisborne's leading bed and breakfast inn.

Sadly neglected over the previous 30 years, from 1999 Cedar House has enjoyed an on-going programme of renovation designed to restore the original grand style, while incorporating the modern comforts and safety features expected by today's traveller.

The refurbishment highlights the extensive use of native (kauri, rimu and matai) timbers, the 3-metre-plus ceilings and lead-light windows. Enter from the front porch into the spacious mahogany-panelled reception hall, which connects the main public rooms and stairs to the upper floor.
