Situated in the most sought-after residential enclave, Cedar House is just metres from the confluence of the Taruheru, Waimata and Turanganui Rivers, and from where it all happens in Gisborne's downtown and harbour basin area.
Gisborne is the main centre of population in the Eastland region, and the first city in the world to see the sun each day. It is acknowledged as having some of the warmest and sunniest weather in New Zealand, with miles of almost deserted white sand beaches washed by the Pacific Ocean, excellent for swimming, surfing and fishing. The hinterland is given over to viticulture (especially award-winning chardonnay, gewurztraminer, riesling), horticulture (citrus, vegetables, olives, truffles, lavender and herbs) as well as agriculture (sheep and cattle) and forestry in the surrounding hills and valleys. Other areas of interest for visitors are the Maori culture, trails to arts and crafts studios, vineyards and gardens, while the outdoor enthusiast can enjoy activities such as horse riding, fishing, surfing, kayaking, hiking and 4-wheel drive trips. The Journey - How to get here:
By Car Visitors to the area are encouraged to travel one-way via the Pacific Coast Highway to or from Rotorua, Tauranga or the Coromandel Peninsula. This spectacular drive round East Cape (you can make a detour to the lighthouse) features the delightful Tolaga and Tokomaru Bays, sweeping beaches, and craggy bluffs offering photographic vistas galore.
From Opotiki in the Bay of Plenty, it is a 335 km (210 mile) drive taking 4-5 hours. The alternative driving route to/from Rotorua or Tauranga is via the scenic Waioeka Gorge from Opotiki (about 2.5 hours drive). From the south, most guests arrive in half a day from Napier - Hastings in the Hawkes Bay. From Lake Taupo or Rotorua there is also the more challenging drive through the native forests of the Urewera Ranges via Lake Waikaremoana.
By Air There are several daily flights of approximately one hour by Air New Zealand Link services connecting Gisborne to Auckland and Wellington. There are also local commuter air links to Rotorua and Napier by light aircraft. Taxis are available at the airport, as are major rental car companies. We can also point you towards other local rental car outlets.
By Bus/Coach There are daily coach (bus) services by Intercity linking Gisborne with all major centres. At this time there are no passenger rail links to Gisborne.
Complimentary transfer We are happy to meet guests at the bus terminal or airport and provide complimentary transport to Cedar House, or vice versa. For more than 3 guests at a time we will book a taxi-van on guests behalf if required.
Directions
From Napier:
Travelling on Gladstone Road (main street) or Awapuni Road, turn left into Peel Street (at traffic lights on Gladstone Rd). Pass over the Peel Street bridge onto Fitzherbert St, go straight through roundabout. The street turns left after 50 meters, changing into Clifford St. We are first on left.
From East Cape
Approaching the town centre, after crossing the bridge into Gladstone Rd (the main street), turn right at the Peel St traffic lights and continue as above.
From Opotiki
Once you are through the Waioeka Gorge, and get onto the flat you come through a tiny hamlet called Ormond. Shortly thereafter, turn left at the sign "Gisborne via Mangapapa", into Ormond Rd. Continue straight on through the "suburbs". At the first round-about continue straight ahead; at the second roundabout left into Fitzherbert St. Turn left again (you have no choice) as it turns into Clifford St. We are first on the left.
